The Ballad of Salomon Pavey
  • Youth Music Theatre
  • Directed by Jeremy James Taylor
  • Musical Director Dominic Stichbury

Winner of The Scotsman Fringe First Award at Edinburgh and later adapted for television, this Elizabethan Ballad Opera is based on the Children of the Chapel Royal and represents youth music theatre at its very best. When Salomon Pavey, a chorister of the Queen’s Chapel, died in 1602 the Children of the Chapel Royal were nearing the end of a remarkable twenty-five years of their history. Along with the boys of St. Paul’s Singing School, they had first created and then dominated the private theatre in London. In their comfortable, candle-lit theatre at Blackfriars, (founded in 1576 by Richard Farrant and William Hunnis) these children delighted the world of the Elizabethan Court.

The Director writes: “With The Ballad of Salomon Pavey we have not tried to reproduce an Elizabethan event; we have sought to recapture more of the spirit than the letter of the age. This is not a children’s play, rather a play about children which, by its very nature, has to be performed by children. The boys in this production are of the same age and probably the same musical talent and dramatic ability as the children they portray.”

Do come and see what makes Youth Music Theatre so very special, and be ready to be enthralled by the performance of our young players of today! Suitable for all ages, adults and children.
