2009 saw three renowned competition wins for Italian pianist AlessandroTaverna, bringing him to the forefront of international young players of his generation. The review below for his performance in the Leeds Piano Competition describes his very special ability, and tonight’s performance will be a chance for Cambridge audiences to experience this special magic in a special and intimate setting. The first of three Tuesday piano recitals that include works by Chopin.

...What a remarkable musician he is: his semi-final recital spanning Ligeti, Chopin, Bach and Stravinsky was fifty minutes of flawless poetry. Taverna sounds to me like the natural successor to his great compatriot Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli – and there’s not much higher praise than that.
